I'd be weary of relying too much on Google - they can pull feature at any time.
When I look at the newsgroup I now see
"Google Groups will no longer be supporting the Welcome Message feature.

This does not affect me, but there are some advantages in managing your own
system, and not relying on Google or anyone else.
