Hi sage-devel, Here's a quick feedback of the Sage Day 25.5 that was held here at LaCIM in Montreal last September 1st. I recall that, held in sandwich between LaCIM 2010 - 20th aniversary and GASCom conferences, that day was an opportunity for their participants to learn more about Sage.
[1] http://wiki.sagemath.org/days25.5 So approximately 25 persons attended almost all new to Sage. Half using Mac OS X, half using Windows, one or two Linux. We managed to install Sage binaries on almost every participant's laptop before 9 am! And by noon, Sage was installed on every computer : First Goal Achieved! Those running Windows followed the instructions written by Franco Saliola the day before here : [2] http://wiki.sagemath.org/days25.5/win_install The first Tutorial was "How to use the Sage Notebook". We used a Sage Worksheet from William Stein which we added some exercises from another worksheet of Franco Saliola from Sage Days 20 copied from earlier one... I translated that worksheet into French. Both English and French version are available on the wiki page [1]. I also translated into French a another worksheet about basic Python objects also available on the wiki page [1] but we didn't used it since one day is not enough. Other talks were given by Florent Hivert, Franco Saliola, Alexandre Blondin Massé and me. Materials and complete schedule are available on the wiki page [1]. Many teachers from Cégeps came which is great and also surprising because I sent only one announcement of that day. I heard my email was forwarded recursively which proves Sage is getting known a little bit. They came with the idea of knowing whether Sage can be helpful for giving their course. Hence, we referred them to Materials and links to recent math courses given with Sage [3]. We also gave some interact and animate demo. Cegep is a school that exists only in Quebec that lies between high school and university. Calculus 1 & 2 and Linear Algebra are the typical math courses given in Cegep. Maple and Mathematica are the typical computer algebra system used in their lab (mainly made of windows). And in 2001, at my Cegep, they didn't have money enough to pay for Mathematica or Maple. [3] http://wiki.sagemath.org/Teaching_with_SAGE We finish the day with an happy hour in a Belgium Pub. Participants were happy for taking part in that day. At least, they now have Sage installed on their laptop and know the basics : how to use the Notebook, how to get help or find the function they need. That's it!
