Try a search for "imaging C module not installed mac" - it turns out
that (like me) you are probably missing some small piece of something
that PIL needs to install.  I also think there are some comments about
this elsewhere on Trac or here, but I can't find them easily :
(   Anyway, it's "known" in that sense.

Turns out I took part in that thread :-}

Just tried the suggested "fix", and it worked. Note that, for me, the problems occur on 10.5, not 10.6.
