Is there an easy way to make this work?

[snip lots of text]
With a "normal" R installation, the demo(graphics) command brings up
some windows with plots. Is there an environmental variable like the
SAGE_MATPLOTLIB_USE_GUI (or whatever the name is) that allows us to
compile with the relevant GUI devices in R?
Would it make sense to have a sage-wide SAGE_COMPILE_GUI switch that
enables these command-line graphics options for all packages, rather
than having separate matplotlib, R, etc., compile option variables?
Thanks,
Jason
