I kind of "solved" the problem by upgrading to emacs22.
Trouble no more.

I think it could be helpful to mention emacs22 as a requirement
for sage-mode somewhere in the docs (wiki maybe). A note about
sage-mode not working properly on emacs21 could be added.
This might save people some headaches. XEmacs might also be
affected (untested), so propagating emacs22 as the best shot
for trying sage-mode seems in place.
