I noticed a bug #6486 late this summer but haven't had time to do anything about it. This might or might not be related.
At the moment, I don't know how a work-around it. It seems to be a coercion problem since we still use GAP to compute the minimum distance over non-binary fields. I heard Robert Miller might be thinking about this but heard of no progress recently.
