It seems impossible to cover all sage functionality with menus, but they could be helpful when dealing with symbols. How about popout windows that contain menus? Users could even make their own menus and call them up as they wished, without effecting the overall notebook GUI.
Units could be useful... I don't think the need for standard mathematical input is that important; to do almost anything serious you need a language. Also he says, "SAGE, as an example on the other hand, is based on Python as a programming component, which is up to now not as common on most web server packages as the above mentioned technologies."
