This sounds to me like a dying hard drive or a memory problem.  Test
your hardware with something like smartctl
(http://www.cyberciti.biz/tips/linux-find-out-if-harddisk-failing.html)
and/or memtest86+ (http://www.memtest.org/)  [be aware that this could
push it over the edge if it's really old].
