Both the FreeBSD issues can be reproduced independently of Sage on FreeBSD 6.2 stock and 7.0 respectively. VMWare images from this place http://www.thoughtpolice.co.uk/ can be useful to cut down on installation time. I am not sure about whether M2 builds find on Solaris or not standalone since I never tried, but there are also various ways to get a hold of either Virtualbox Solaris images or to install into a VMWare image for example. One pain about Solaris 10 as well as OpenSolaris is that their GNU tools are ancient, so you might want to invest in building gcc 4.2.4 or 4.3.2 on such a box.
