Nope, it didn't work on Solaris with a stock gcc 4.2.4 with gcc, g++
and gfortran. The issue was related to statically linking in GCC
runtime libraries.

The problem on FreeBSD is unrelated to Sage and caused by IIRC the
different ways factory and NTL include iostream, i.e. legacy vs.
standard conform. This cause some failure with wide character support
for some reason with stock FreeBSD 6.2 compilers.

A while ago somebody contacted me offlist about a FreeBSD 7 build
problem, but I never had time to look at the problem. The issue was
also reported in the M2 google group.
