One possible disadvantage is that Ubuntu 24.04, one of the most common distros, uses numpy 1.26 [1]. The current SageMath package for Debian/Ubuntu is 9.5, so dropping support for numpy 1 would make it impossible to release an updated the Debian/Ubuntu SageMath package. However, I don't know if anyone is actively working on doing so, so this may well be moot.
