My problem occurred restricted to one machine, before I came home and
synced my home directory, so I don't think the mirroring was actually
relevant (except that it might mean that whatever went wrong on the
first machine got mirrored to the second).

Here's another theory:  I believe I was actually use GAP, via the sage
notebook, while I installed the small group database.  Could this have
caused the problem?

Or maybe I had some junk left in my home directory from some old
version of sage, and that junk caused trouble?  I hadn't upgraded
in a while.
