Dear Colleagues,

I'm pretty new to the list however I've accidently found something about
SAGE on the web and also tried to use it 1 year ago or so. It is a great
software, thank you for developing it.

Today I found 2 entries about WebMathematics Interactive (WMI) in your list
so I'd like to comment them in very short.

That's pretty interesting .

This appears to be a GPL'd Hungarian project that hasn't been updated
in almost 4 years.
It offers users online access to both MuPAD and a version of Maple

(Maple 5) from a long time ago -- I very much doubt that's legal, but
maybe the Hungarians don't care about such things.
It doesn't save any state, does not allow one to execute arbitrary
commands, and does not allow one to write programs.

What it does do is provide access to very specific functionality,
e.g., compute an
antiderivative of a given function. I certainly envision having
something like this
for SAGE, and maybe Timothy is the guy to fill in a lot of

functionality once appropriate
infrastructure is in place.

William

First of all, thank you for taking the time and trying WMI. Our main purpose
was to create a really easy-to-use web based small software which can help
in the daily teaching.

So, we continuously work on WMI, however we don't have such a big developer
team as SAGE has. Unfortunately. In Hungary it's quite difficult to find
professors who can really help towards scientific results (=papers) AND
software development. However, we would like to announce WMI2 within a week
during the CADGME conference, Pecs, Hungary.

Our Maple 5 is completely legal, we have a full campus license. That time we
purchased that license there were no restrictions on network use like
embedding web based CAS interfaces. I always considered the Maple usage
legal because it is just a demo interface and the downloadable live CD
doesn't contain it at all. In addition, I also wrote the MuPAD development
team who didn't answer me at all. I must tell you that WMI also works with
Maxima (which is clearly legal) and, of course, it is the default CAS for
both WMI1 and WMI2.

I agree that Hungarian people usually don't feel such strict emotions in
legalism like Western European countries. This is a general rule, but it is
changing. Personally, I'm fully committed to the legal software, especially
free software.

I think we have different goals in developing SAGE and WMI, however there
are common parts. I think you are doing a great job and many tricks and
ideas can be taken from it to enhance the user interface for students and
teachers.

In fact, WMI1 saves some states within a session (e.g. magnification ratio,
ranges). This will be enhanced in WMI2. What WMI1 (and WMI2) does very well
is the extensive caching of problems and solutions. I think it is a big
advance if many students want to use it at the same time.

While that seems to be true for the website at the University of Szeged,

the sourceforge site is still active:

Summary: WMI 1.0.2 has been released

The website and the live demo looks much too slick to be 4 years old, too.

Cheers,

Michael

This is the latest version which has no big changes since 1.0.0 but some
fine-tuning was added. In fact, WMI1 is in a statistics gathering phase. We
collect feedbacks. We, like many other teachers and students in Hungary,
continuously work with WMI1 during the teaching classes at the University of
Szeged with an average of 400 hits and 750 newly solved problems per day. As
we gain much experiences we have many ideas how to extend WMI to fit our
needs much more.

Now WMI2 is in a pre-alpha stage, but I'd like to share the beta version
with you as soon as it is available for public visits.

That's for the first time.
