I agree. The problem I was trying to point out was that as long as
there are problems with permissions rsync will not delete files no
longer present, but that can obviously be fixed easily.

No problem, now that semester has started for me again I am spending
less time on the fun things, too. How about a daily cron job that
chown's /home/was/htdocs to the proper permissions each night?
