This is a horrible problem, but fortunately there is an easy fix:

  0. cd SAGE_ROOT
  1. ./sage -f sage_scripts-2.1.4
  2. rm local/lib/sage-current-location.txt
  3. ./sage  (then exit)
  4. ./sage -upgrade
