There is no reason to change to ZZ[x], since in the future (not sure exactly when) x (and a,b,c,d,...,z) will all be some sort of symbolic indeterminates. I.e., changing from QQ to ZZ is not worth doing, since a more dramatic change is on the way (after sage-2.0).
