One other point. It is not only a question of hardware. There is also
the problem of system administration. Maybe it is easy to install some
OS'es in virtual machines, but is not a sinecure to keep them up to date.
Even when you install from the latest CD's or DVD, there is a lot of
upgrading to do. Possibly part of this process can be automated.
