For what it’s worth, if anything: I have recently installed quite a few 
different distros, all 64 bit. I have also tried the Sabily 32-bit beta (both 
using wubi and directly). Without exception, they gave difficulties.

 

1.      Unity is too much of a straight-jacket. Nothing with regard to desktop 
layout seems to be configurable.

2.      On Gnome (3) there do not appear to be any panels; no menus can be 
accessed. The only way to shut down from Gnome 3 relatively safely is by 
terminating the X-server.

3.      On Gnome Classic there are panels, but they are not configurable.

4.      Only on Gnome Classic (without effects), everything appears to be 
functioning well.

 

I thought it was my system, perhaps the nVidia card, because of my four-monitor 
setup. But following this thread, there appears to be something deeper.

 

Although I am not particularly a KDE fan, everything is working well with KDE 4.

 

My system has plenty of RAM (8 GB) and also enough video RAM (2 GB).
