There are certainly synths that are a bit hard to get started with. These might be two of them. I've not tried either. I would come back to them later.

i also tried fluidsynth which kept crashing rg when recording midi, as
well as timidity which crashed rg too (though considerably less often)
both with the error:
"out of processor power for real-time audio processing. Cannot
continue."

That's not normal. I'm running 11-year-old under-powered hardware with no problems.

Have you configured your security limits and are you using a real-time kernel?

See my guide if you haven't already:

http://www.tedfelix.com/linux/linux-midi.html

i found that there were latency issues with timidity's metronome and my
keyboard presses (not so with fluidsynth though).

Running without a real-time kernel tends to cause this.

yes there is when i set ALSA as yoshimi's default midi and preferred
audio:
129:0 yoshimi: input
the instruments are there
everything seems to work fine!

  Sounds good.

however, when i set JACK as those, it doesn't show up as such,

This is normal. Rosegarden does not support JACK MIDI.

i find this puzzling because i though rg was supposed to use jack.

Rosegarden uses JACK for audio tracks. It uses ALSA for MIDI.

mind you, i'm using pipewire and so have pipewire-alsa, pipewire-jack so
i don't know if that makes a difference.

I haven't tried any of those, so I cannot say whether they have any effect. We had some complaints a while back, but those appear to have cleared up. So I suspect you should be OK here.

Ted.
