this is the decisive answer i was hoping for!
both you and will confirm it.

i tried linuxsampler and amsynth.
both show up in the instruments parameters, but i can't do a thing with
either.

i also tried fluidsynth which kept crashing rg when recording midi, as
well as timidity which crashed rg too (though considerably less often)
both with the error:
"out of processor power for real-time audio processing. Cannot
continue."

i found that there were latency issues with timidity's metronome and my
keyboard presses (not so with fluidsynth though).

however, with yoshimi no problems with anything!

yes there is when i set ALSA as yoshimi's default midi and preferred
audio:
129:0 yoshimi: input
the instruments are there
everything seems to work fine!

however, when i set JACK as those, it doesn't show up as such, but
as:
14:0 Midi Through Port-0
all the instruments are the same, but there is no sound even though
there is when i use the virtual piano in yoshimi

i find this puzzling because i though rg was supposed to use jack.

mind you, i'm using pipewire and so have pipewire-alsa, pipewire-jack so
i don't know if that makes a difference.
