You've found an interesting puzzle. I don't yet have any clue why this is breaking. It looks so simple and obvious that it's hard to imagine anything causing the kind of problem we're seeing here, but I tried the first three things that occurred to me, and none of them made any difference at all. Weird. I'll figure it out eventually, but I'm going to have to come back to it after my family is asleep, and I'm staying up all night to keep on this night shift deal.
