Dear All,
I am saddened to hear of the passing of Hugo Rietveld. As one who was
“at the beginning”, I am most appreciative of Hugo’s leap of inspiration
to fully exploit the information contained in a powder pattern and am
grateful for his kind support of my own efforts in this field. What we
now know as Rietveld Refinement inspired the development of a wide range
of other powder diffraction tools especially structure solution so that
now powder diffraction takes a much larger role in crystallography for
structure determination (even including proteins!) and materials
characterization.
My condolences to Hugo’s family and friends for their loss and may he
rest in peace.
