--------------------------------- Postdoctoral position (SF 2008/12) Physics, chemistry, material science The position is for 3 years and immediately available We invite applications for a postdoctoral position in the Berlin Neutron Scattering Centre, BENSC, at the Helmholtz Centre Berlin for Materials and Energy (known before as Hahn-Meitner-Institut), Berlin, Germany. The Helmholtz Centre Berlin is a German National Laboratory and a member of the Hermann von Helmholtz Association of National Research Centres and has about 800 employees. BENSC (http://www.hmi.de/bensc/) is a user facility open to scientists from all over the world. To probe the structure and dynamics of solids and liquids, BENSC provides the national and international research community with state-of-the-art neutron scattering equipment and expertise. The EXtreme Environment Diffractometer (EXED) is a new neutron diffractometer, primarily designed for powder and single crystal neutron scattering research at extreme environments such as high magnetic fields. The instrument will start user operation as an innovative, variable and ultrahigh resolution time-of-flight diffractometer in 2009. In collaboration with the high field magnet team it will be developed into a dedicated station to open up new opportunities for neutron scattering research at unprecedented high magnetic fields. We are particularly interested in highly motivated candidates who will take an active part in commissioning EXED and developing appropriate data analysis tools, and join the existing HZB research activities in the field of transition-metal magnetism. Knowledge of computer programming and single crystal diffraction is highly desirable, background in neutron or X-ray scattering, magnetism, crystallography, and/or neutron instrumentation would be advantageous. The scientific objectives will partly focus on powder and single-crystal neutron diffraction studies of strongly correlated materials. Staff at BENSC has access to 30% of the beamtime on all neutron scattering instruments for their own research. The position provides young scientists with an excellent opportunity to broaden their experience and develop their expertise. The position is tenable for three years with a salary ranging from 35.000 to 50.000 EUR (gross income per annum) depending on age, family status and qualification.
