John I would definitively try to do some Pair distribution Function PDF analysis of your data. As you know to do this analysis, there are few calibration files needed and few specs on the measurement side. PDF has been very successful in finding some amorphous fraction in crystalline material and if I recall well explained the difference in the properties of two samples which from the rietveld point of view were just the same.
