Postdoctoral Research Position at Argonne National Laboratory

The Basic Energy Sciences Synchrotron Radiation Center (BESSRC) at the Advanced Photon Source (APS) at Argonne National Laboratory (near Chicago, Illinois) is offering a postdoctoral research position to work at a beamline for high energy X-ray diffraction. High energy diffraction (E>50 keV) is characterized by very high q-space resolution combined with large penetration depths. It offers the opportunity to study samples several mm thick and takes advantage of the high resolution and intensity of x-ray diffractometers installed at modern synchrotrons. The large Ewald sphere with a radius of about 50 Å-1 enables accurate measurements at high momentum transfers.
BESSRC-CAT has equipped one of its wiggler beamlines with a high resolution triple axis diffractometer, which is used for single crystal diffraction experiments as well as for powder diffraction and studies of pair distribution function in amorphous and liquid materials. Since BESSRC is an user facility, the types of experiments done cover areas of materials science, physics, chemistry and geosciences. The candidate is expected to work in collaboration with the existing user programs and concentrate in addition on the development of crystallography using high energy X-rays.
Applicants should have received their Ph.D. in Physics, Chemistry or a related discipline within the last three years. A broad scientific interest, excellent communication skills and the ability to work in a group and with users are expected. Applicants should have significant experience with at least one of the following: crystallography, synchrotron radiation experiments or neutron diffraction. Strong laboratory skills are required.

Candidates should send a resume and contact information of 2 or 3 references to:
