Ah, the problem seems to have gone in the most recent package from https://launchpad.net/~stef-dev/+archive/sane-backend-genesys
Just installing libsane_1.0.22git-5ubuntu2ppa14~lucid1_amd64.deb from there seems to restore the old, working condition.
