to answer my own question: Recently it was pointed out to me that there is a "RDAP Operational Profile for gTLD Registries and Registrars" and given that ICANN therein demands to use the ROID (resp. the Registrar IANA ID) and NOT an EPP-handle as i initially assumed, my question is moot.
