Imap is a protocol just as pop3 is. If you use pop3 mail is taken off the server
and stored on your machine that you use to check mail. Now if you use Imap you
can then store or leave you mail on the server and wherever you go you just
access the server and you mail is there. With Pop3 you have to haul your machine
to the bush if you want to reference an old message as its on personal machine
as opposed to the server.

Outlook and Mozilla et al, are designed for pop3 as well as Imap. I think that
pop is pretty much on its way to being dead and Imap will take over. You can do
interesting things with Imap. You may want to do abit more research before you
decide on pop3 or imap. I would suggest imap.

        Cheers,

        Aly.
