OK, now I'm pissed.  I created a directory testdir and copied all of the
ttf fonts in TrueType to it and ran mkfontdir.  The font.dir file contains
0.

What the Hell is it doing to me and why is it ignoring fonts?

I see nothing in the mkfontdir man page to indicate why it is doing what
it is doing.
