This is probably a really dumb question but
Do I generate a key with puTTY.exe
under SSH-->auth-->Private key file for authentication?
If so can I use any type of file?

Thank you

You do need a key; you'll have to generate one on the client, and
then transfer the *public* key to the server. If you plan to allow
only SSH access, then you should also change the password field for
your account on the server to "*SSH*" (sans quotes). This will need
to be in the shadow file if you have one; easiest and safest way to
mess is to "pwunconv" first, edit /etc/passwd, then "pwconv".
