I had a similar problem. I, once, let up2date do a kernel for me an my RH7.1. It put the 2.4.9 kernel in and I could no longer get on the Internet or do anything that involved networking. My solution. Boot back to the old kernel in which everything still worked perfectly fine. Run up2date sans upgrading kernel, and upgrade the kernel myself. Lesson learned by me: stick with rolling my own kernels.
