Unfortunately not uncommon. The fellow I work for is a progressive
thinker, and is also an instructor at UI's graduate school of library
and information science. He teaches his students how to manipulate
internet protocols for themselves, rather than to merely react to an
interface. (It's quite a thrill to see the looks on their faces when
they realize that they can talk to a mail server via telnet!)
Unfortunately, he's discovered that there's a substantial amount of
discomfort, not just with open source, but with the internet in
general, once students learn that there's no one in charge! A lot of
folks at this school feel much better thinking that Father Bill is
taking care of business, rather than embrace the unfettered,
free-flowing internet, along with the freedom it represents and the
vigilance that it requires. That scares me, especially coming from
the future decision-makers in this field ... they're trading freedom
for perceived security, and of course, getting neither.
