I'ts really quite simple. You DSL modem (previously internal) is gone, so
you need a new one.

With some minor exceptiosn to the rule, you need an external one to use it
with linux. At least painlessly.

So, simply call up your DSL provider and explain that your PC was stolen
and that you need to buy another DSL modem, but you want an external one.

They can either recommend a copmpatable external modem, or sell you one
directly. Make the purchase :).

Then you put two ethernet cards in your 486. Unless you want ti to do more
than be the gateway, the cards can be 10baseT. If you hub is only 100baseT
then one of them needs to be 100mbit capable. I say this because you can
get old 10baset nics for $5 around here. Connect one to the external DSL
modem (only 10mbit needed but 100 shouldn't hurt), and one to your hub.
Setup NAT (ip masquerading) and a firewall and you are in business.

Get your external modem, and them come back for details regarding the
masquerading if need be.
