Since you don't have a firewall, then your machine is "directly" on the
Internet with a DNS registration somewhere, right? (Note: a static IP
number would be very helpful, but not critical (can use dnydns.org or
some other dynamic dns service). That means that your
linux box can be it's own smtp server - you don't have to rely on a RELAY
such as your company's exchange server NT box for smtp service in order
for mail to be sent out to the Internet. Do it for yourself. Just as you
can receive your own mail directly, addressed to your box directly, you can
send mail directly to the Internet. That's what I do.

What do you use to read/compose messages with that involve your Linux box
instead of the company's exchange server? I log into my linux box and use
pine, but I've installed a web mail client on other systems.

Now, are you looking at some PC clients using your Linux mail server to
receive/send? If so, you must add imap (or pop3) service to your Linux
box. You can also install a web mail client (e.g. horde's imp) to
read/send via a web browser interface on any PC mail in an inbox on your
Linux box.
