Run Xconfigurator or xf86config and select the resolution(s) and color
depths you want, but don't select any 8bpp modes if you don't wish to ever
use them. You might have to hand edit your /etc/X11/XF86Config file a
little bit if you've selected multiple resolutions and/or color depths
and X is using the wrong one by default. If you only select one res and
one depth, you should be ok :)
