Maybe. If you're using a do-everything package like Netscape for
mail, you're right. If you're using Pine, for instance, and you're
using fetchmail to, well, fetch mail, you'll need sendmail running,
because that's the mechanism by which fetchmail delivers to your
mailbox. In my case, I deliver using my ISP's SMTP server (configured
in Pine), retrieve using fetchmail via POP, and it's delivered to my
mailbox by sendmail. (Really, I never knew how much stuff a typical
GUI mail client was doing for me until I set this up!).
It'll work for local delivery out-of-the-box, but as has been pointed
out, it's very picky about name resolution, and everything has to be
consistent in your network setup.
