Hi,
I still got the same problems and I still can't find the solution.
---
For all who didn't get the previous mails:
I'm using RH 6.1 standard KDE-workstation installation (alltough Gnome is
running, not KDE. Don't ask me how this happened, it just did)
I've setup a samba-network (It works, don't ask me how I dit it)
But I can't get a external modem to work properly.
(I CAN call in to a ISP, but I CAN'T surf, get my mail or get information
from newsgroups)
And i'm a Linux-newbee.
---
I did the following things since last evening:
* I've checed that i have a /etc/resolv.conf file.
The contents are:
----------------------------
search
nameserver 62.100.30.228
nameserver 62.100.30.244
---------------------------
* I've tried nslookup home.netscape.com and i get:
No response from server
can't find name for adress
62.100.30.228
62.100.30.244
62.100.30.228
default servers are not available
*Extra info: The IP's of my ISP are:
62.100.30.228
62.100.30.244
It's a free internetprovider and I've tried another one, but that one isn't
working either.
I try to call-in on a Dutch KPN-Telecom network (Everyone who is from The
Netherlands knows what i'm talking about)
(It's just a telephone-network, but, who knows, it could require some
special settings.)
*I did a search on the file "bind" and I got:
/usr/lib/tkx8.0.4/help/tk/control/bind
which turned out to be somekind of helpfile (I didn't read it, maybe I
should)
*I did a traceroute on the IP's of my nameservers and got:
network is unreachable.
*Then I tried to install the bind-utils package.
I've found the package bind-utils-8.2.1-7 on the Redhat 6.1 CD.
* I tried to install and even upgrade it and got the message:
package bind-utils-8.2.1-7 is already installed
package bind-utils-8.2.1-7 is already installed
*Then i clicked "ok" and get the messsage:
upgrade of 2 packages failed.
*Then clicked the button "query" and the first thing i see in the upper
right corner of the window is:
install date: not installed (I guess it's referring to the version on the
cd)
*I've used kfind to search for bind-utils-8.2.1-7 on "/" and get:
cant' find bind-utils-8.2.1-7
So, I don't think bind-utils is installed but the installer says it is.
Where can I find bind-utils if it is installed?
* And I can't find it in the Runlevelmanager (although I don't know if it's
suppost to be there)
I've setup a samba network in the past and I did kinda half of the security.
I stranded at the IPchains and didn't really had the time to read about it.
Could it be that the small piece of the securityprotocols that i have set up
is causing the problems?
I've setup a small piece of the IPchains in the past and I turned it off
because my network didn't work anymore after that.
And I've set bind interfaces only to "no".
I don't know much about the Linux OS so if there is anybody out there who
can help me, PLEASE HELP.
Every reply is appreciated.
Remon
