It sounds to me like you machine is unable to connect to a nameserver, and is 
therefore unable to resolve host names to IP addresses.

Here's a couple of things you might check:

Do you have the bind-utils package installed?
What happens if you open a terminal window, and try to mannually look up a name (ie, 
type "nslookup home.netscape.com")?
Do you have an /etc/resolv.conf file? and what are its contents?
