I'm a beginner with to LINUX, starting with it about 4 or five months ago,
and I am nearly sure there one or several of my LINUX settings simply
badly configured - nothing I'm very much worried about: I will learn. But
even with these beginner-settings on my machine it was - if I remember
correctly -- only Netscape, being able to crash the system.
Here on my machine it seems to mean danger for the whole LINUX when
running Netscape: if I do not check memory and swap every 5 minutes or so
when Netscape is on, it has happened that either of them must have been
*(1) so full, that everything on X froze: I was not even able to reboot
the system ... which meant: I had to pull the plug ... (no, I didn't pull
it -- just used the power-off button: but is there such a big difference
...?) ... until now nothing on the file-system seems having been
corrupted by these crashes, but I am not crazy enough to risk the
destruction of it by continuing to use this Netscape ... I have here this
4.74 Version on my machine, and in most cases I only use this stuff if I
need to run a picture capable browser -- rest of the time (and in the
meantime by far most of it ... ): lynx.
The only solution for me to this Netscape nightmare: I don't use it
whenever possible ... I have given up hope nearly completely that Netscape
*ever* will work, with the consequence, that I'm simply completely
uninterested whether there's a so-called new version of it or not ...
As to Netscape Messenger: I don't want to write here what I think about
its looks ...
But I just set up Pine a week ago or so: nice colors, customization
possibilities are -- as far as I can see -- great, and it's much livelier
and quicker than Messenger is .. IIRC the only problem I had with Pine,
was when I opened lynx from inside Pine: afterwards I couldn't get back to
Pine, because I couldn't shutdown lynx ... I had to close down the xterm
it was running in and then simply restarted Pine in another xterm ... I
didn't have to pull the plug because the system went to its knees ...
And sure: it was not so so easy to set up Pine (but much easier as I
thought before ...)
There's just one serious thing, why I will need Netscape: Netscape
Composer ... it gives me the chance to change my pages on my site very
quickly .. but I'm rather sure I'll find a way even to replace this html
builder sooner or later ...
Pine is there, Lynx too: why should I wait for another Netscape
version? ...

*(1) = I only can assume it's been memory and swap being full: in such a
situation it was impossible to check them -- but IIRC from situations when
running Netscape: the whole system became slower and slower, I checked
memory and swap and found they were nearly completely full (with probably
just enough space to shutdown Netscape ...)
