Well, you already know about the "kgcc" fix, so this may be a shot
in the dark, but.....
I _always_ build a kernel out of /usr/src/linux, not /root or anywhere else.
This may have no effect, but did you re-create the build tree or at least
try
a "make clean" or "make mrproper" after the failed attempts.
Again, just reaching here. What you have tried should have worked....
