I had the same problem with Win2000. I found the easiest thing to do is to
simply map to the ip address through explorer.

There are a bunch of things you most likely want to do:
(1) Make sure your workgroup matches the workgroup or the domain of your
Win98 box
(2) Set the server string to something that Windoze easily recognizes (ie:
Linux)
(3) Set the security to user

Those are the most basic. For even more fun and compatibility:
(4) Uncomment the following lines: encrypt passwords, smb password file,
unix password sync, passwd program, password chat (leave what they are set
to)
(5) Now for every user do an smbadduser and specifiy a user name and
password

To get even better, you can use your Linux box as a domain master and have
it handle your network logins as if it were an NT domain master!
(6) domain master = yes
(7) domain logins = yes
(8) wins support = yes

Back to the original problem... If after 1-3 you still do not see the box,
you may need to set the "interfaces" parameter. If you box is 192.168.1.1
on a class C subnet, the line would be "interfaces = 192.168.1.1/24". You
might also want to set the remote announce. Still using the previous
example the line would be "remote announce 192.168.1.255". This tells
samba
where to make its broadcast announcements of where it is.

Good Luck!
Warren

The other replies should help but if they don't solve the problem, read
/usr//doc/samba-2.0.5a/docs/textdocs/DIAGNOSTICS.txt. I find it very
useful
and have used this on several occasions to find out what was going on. It
is a
very good step by step test of the various pieces that must work for samba
to
work.
