The other replies should help but if they don't solve the problem, read
/usr//doc/samba-2.0.5a/docs/textdocs/DIAGNOSTICS.txt.  I find it very useful
and have used this on several occasions to find out what was going on.  It is a
very good step by step test of the various pieces that must work for samba to
work.
