I'm trying to set up my Linux Redhat 6.2 box to talk via eth0 to the internet.
The ethernet card comes up ok. ifconfig shows it running.
The machine connects via a hub to an sdsl line. the gateway is at 192.168.11.1.
Another machine also on the hub sees the gateway, is acting as a webserver.
That machine is set up as 192.168.11.3, subnetmask is 255.255.255.0
The Linux box is set up as 192.168.11.120, subnetmask is 255.255.255.0
The linux box can ping itself on that address, but can't ping the other box or
the gateway. If I try I get the network unreachable message.
Here are the values from the control panel:
Routing: Default gateway -> 192.168.11.1
Default gateway device -> eth0
No routes set up - I'm assuming that it will just use eth0.
Interfaces:
lo -- all the expected stuff
eth0 - IP -> 192.168.11.120, proto -> none, atboot ->yes, active
Hosts:
127.0.0.1 etc....
192.168.11.120, www.mydomain.com, nickname: nick.
So, what is wrong with the setup? The machine is invisible to all, and the
network is invisible to it. Is it a netmask thing? I'm not really experienced
with setting up IPs and so I wonder if anyone can see the problem...
many thanks in advance
