The problem is Xircom.  They aren't very friendly to the Linux/*BSD 
communities.  Send them a message that you don't like their attitude toward
alternative OS's by taking your business elsewhere.

Personally, I like 3Com's PC-Cards.  I've got some old 3c589's, and several
3c575 (in both the original 3Com form, as well as the newer 3C575FEBT
type designations).  Their cards have always been a plug and go setup
(at least for me).

As for PCI cards, Netgear, 3Com, Intel.  Any of those make for a happy,
well adjusted machine.
