Tom: Could you give some more info about which version of RedHat or I assume RedHat and what kernel version? Does your system hang at the prompt? Are you starting in text mode or using gnome? What kind of hardware do you have? I have seen some system lockups due to IRQ conflicts with certain ISA boards at the root prompt.
