As far as I know all modern BusLogic cards will work. If you had trouble
with one because of your motherboard, it is probably not a Linux issue but
a hardware issue.
Personally, I use Adaptec 2940UW's with success. Not everyone is as lucky
as me, however, support for Adaptec cards is continually improving and
most of the problems that plagued the earlier Adaptecs are dissipating due
to gradual change of heart of Adaptec themselves. I have also used the
NCR53c800 based cards and consider them to have the best price/performance
ratio, if you can find them.
