Don't know if this is related...my network developed this syndrome
sometime after I added another machine..just down one wire though. The
main box ix86 with redhat, then the sun3/50, then to a win95 box and
lastly (added) another ix86 box running redhat via NFS. I didn't actually
notice it until sometime after...but the ping times between the machines
stayed good and quick..telnet was fine..but with NFS or FTP transfers, a
lot of errors were occurring and it was dog_slow (<100kbps)
The sun3/50 was the worse effected machine, so I removed it from the
series down that wire and put it the other side of the main box's ether
and everything has returned to normal.
All I can guess at is the sun's ether_interface was in someway not real
happy with the loading down that wire, and was somehow causing a general
state of packet error for all machines...certainly, just moving it that
one meter of cable fixed the trouble, even though the same number of boxes
are on that wire...weird.
