While this will indeed work, it didn't answer the question, as asked.
You cannot add to the / partition to make it larger. The only way to do
that is to repartition the disk, and then reload Linux. And this will only
work if the two partitions are contiguous on the hard disk.
If you do not want to reload Linux, then you will have to dedicate the
300MB as a separate directory. The suggestion to use it as /usr is a
good one.
