I did a similar thing when I dumped dos. I simply reformatted the partition
as ext2, moved a directory to it, added it to fstab and let it get
automounted.

In my case it was small so I moved /usr/doc to it.

With 300MB you can move then entire /usr directory there most likely
(depending on what you have installed).
