actually it's my fault for misreading your original message.

You don't mention which version of Windows you are using but
windows has to be configured to search the DNS domain as well
(just like you configured your *nix boxes by updating resolv.conf)

On Windows 2000 for instance you go into the Advanced tab
of TCP/IP properties in control panel and you'll see a box :

        DNS suffix for this connection

and you can fill in  chamkila.org.  Just above this box is an
option to search a list of suffixes rather than just one.
